Murphy is Recipient of Girl Scout Gold Award
WARWICK, R.I.- On Saturday, May 20, Samantha P. Murphy of Somerset was awarded her Girl Scout Gold Award pin and citations at the Warwick Country Club.
The event, hosted by the Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England, was a night of joyous celebration as over 80 Junior Girl Scouts were awarded their Bronze Award, 15 Cadette Girl Scouts were awarded the Silver Award. There were 12 Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts were awarded the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting.
Murphy was awarded the Gold Award for her take action project, HER*Story, which garnered over 80 hours of educating the community on women’s history and prominent females that have trailblazed the path for future generations.
“Before this project, many people hadn’t heard of these women and everything they did. It’s disheartening to see that these women aren’t being celebrated or taught about in the classroom,” Murphy said regarding the outcome of HER*Story.
Those in attendance included Rhode Island Congressmen David Cicilline and Jim Langevin, as well as the CEO of the Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England, Pam Hyland (pictured above in black). Also in attendance, was the emcee Nancy Armstrong (picture below in green), an active member of the Girl Scouts of 65 years.
One of the twelve Gold Awardees was not present, as she is currently serving in the U.S. Army, and had her sister there on her behalf. Two other Gold Awardees announced their acceptances to the Air Force Academy Preparatory School and the U.S. Naval Academy as well. This is especially important, as receiving the Gold Award promotes the recipient a rank higher in the Armed Forces, a coveted incentive for their service.
The Girl Scout of USA sent Murphy a certificate congratulating her on achieving the highest award in Girl Scouting. Murphy also received official citations of congratulations from MA State Representative and Speaker Pro Tempore Patricia Haddad, MA State Senator Michael Rodrigues, MA Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy III, MA U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren.
From Rhode Island, Murphy received official citations from: R.I. Speaker of the House Nicholas A. Mattiello; R.I. House Majority Leader K. Joseph Shekarchi; R.I. House Minority Leader Patricia L. Morgan; Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin; Cranston Mayor Allan Fung; U.S. Senator Jack Reed; Congressman David Cicilline.
Murphy is a sophomore at Salem State University, Class of 2020, studying Art History. She was an SBRHS honors graduate in 2016.
